Carp streamer (koi-nobor) made of cotton with hand-drawn tsutsugaki design which is magoi, black carp. Koi-nobori is flown on the Boy's Festival (or Child's Festival) on May 5th. According to the old Chinese legend, carp became dragons while they swim up waterfalls so that they are the symbol of strength and success. 20th century. In excellent condition except for some small holes (1.5cm x 1.5 cm or smaller) and a few balck stains. 20th century. Sewn by machine. L:3m32cm W:98cm

This is a juban ( under kimono ) which is made of cotton cloth with shibori for the sleeves, with katazome ( stencil-dye ) for the top body and with kanoko shibori ( bound dots ) for the lower part. The sleeves and the lower body are dyed with natural indigo but the top body look chemical one. In excellent condition except for light stains in the sleeves. Early 20th century. 128cm x 130cm

Pilgrim's cotton sodenashi (vest) with many stamps of holy places where she (woman pilgrim). She took the pilgrimage to "Saikoku-sanjyu-san-kasho" where are 33 temples (holy places) in Osaka-fu, Kyoto-fu, Hyogo, Nara, Wakayama and Gifu prefectures. She completed all the pilgrimage and the vest has all 33 stamps. The date is Showa 3-nen (1928). In excellent condition. 48cm x 72cm

Hanten worn at the festival of the shrine in Iwate-cho, Iwate prefecture in Tohoku. It is made of thick cotton and has katazome (stencil-resist-dye) Kaen-hoju (flaming jewel) within kanji letters "Gongen" which mean "A god which appears in a temporary figure". It has a dyer's name in Morioka. The bright blue cloth inside looks synthetic. All hand-sewn and in excellent condition. 20th century. 130cm x 70cm
