This is a furosaki byobu, a folding screen which is a one of the utensils used in the tea ceremony. It is put near the furnace. It is made of wood frame and reversible, one side is Japanese paper with Umebachi-mon pattern and the other side is ajiro, wickerwork. In excellent condition. Carp streamer (koi-nobor) made of cotton with hand-drawn tsutsugaki design which is magoi, black carp. Koi-nobori is flown on the Boy's Festival (or Child's Festival) on May 5th. According to the old Chinese legend, carp became dragons while they swim up waterfalls so that they are the symbol of strength and success. 20th century.
