These are plates with hand-painted Kenzan style design of autumn flowers such as chrysanthemums and balloon flowers. They have kanji letters "Kenzan" in the back. The sakiori textiles were mostly made in the regions along the Japan Sea side where the cold weather made it hard to cultivate cotton. A pair of wooden lacquer plates with hand-painted Daruma (Bodhidharma) who is the founder of the Zen, a sect of Buddhism. The gold daruma and the daruma doll are hand-carved. In excellent condition except for a tiny chip (1.5mm) on the rim of one of the plates and a very slight hair line on the surface of the other. Diameter:17cm, H:4cm The first half of the 20th century.
