Each has hand-painted pictures and signs such as three kabuki "kumadori" which is special makeup of the kabuki player and Otahuku. This is a lithograph print by Morita Kohei ( 1916~1994 ) who was a Japanese style painter and studied under Yasuda Yukihiko. A pair of "Ashimoto andon (foot lantern)" made of wood, bamboo and washi (Japanese handmade paper). The wood frame is painted with "Tame-nuri" which is one of techniques of urushi. Clear urushi is painted on red urushi. The paper is replaced from shoji-gami (white paper for a screen) to recycled washi which was a record book of a merchant in late Edo period. Washi is made from paper mulberry bark and very strong. With carton boxes. 20th century. In excellent condition...
