Kurume kasuri hanten with double kasuri "MinaMi character"motif which means "south". Kurume is located in Fukuoka prefecture in Kyushu and has been producing cotton kasuri textiles since late Edo period (mid 19th century). They use machine-spun yarn since 1883 and dyed with chemical indigo and machine woven after early 1970s. This one is hand woven but machine-sewn. It might have been worn for a festival. Pilgrim's hanten made of thin white cotton with many stamps of the sacred sites that are called "Shodo-shima Hachiju-Hachi-kasho Reijo (Shodo Island 88 holy places) located in Kagawa prefecture in Shikoku. The pilgrimage route was opened in late 17th century. The head band has stamps from Omine-san (Mt.Omine) in Nara prefecture. No sign of a place in the belly band. Girl's han-juban (short under kimono) made of hand-spun cotton with beni-itajime shibori asanoha patten, which is one kind of board-clamped dyeing with benibana (safflower). Benibana was very precious in old days and it was mainly grown in Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture. The last photo shows the process of beni-itajime in old days (Reference source: Yomigaeru Maboroshino Senshoku, published by Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo). Late 19th to mid 20th century. This is a silk meisen Haori which is heiyo-gasuri. As for the heiyo-gasuri, warps and wefts are stencil printed separately and then machine-woven. Heiyo-gasuri made it possible to make more vivid, colorful and free design. It has reddish brown flowers with gray and yellow in beige ground. Cotton cloth with Arashi-shibori which is one kind of tie-dye invented in Arimatsu-Narumi in 1880. The cloth is wrapped around a big pole and thread is also rolled around it. The cloth is compressed and dyed. This cloth is remake and made of 4 fragments and has 4 mending patches. It also has a patch written as "hara-maki(belly band)".
