Kurume kasuri hanten with double kasuri "MinaMi character"motif which means "south". Kurume is located in Fukuoka prefecture in Kyushu and has been producing cotton kasuri textiles since late Edo period (mid 19th century). They use machine-spun yarn since 1883 and dyed with chemical indigo and machine woven after early 1970s. This one is hand woven but machine-sewn. It might have been worn for a festival. Cotton kimono worn by a Shugen-sha or Yamabushi who practiced Shugendo. Shugendo is the Japanese unique religion combining Buddhism, Shintoism, and worship of nature (mountains). A practioner (shugen-sha) trained himself in the holy mountains that is ascetic and very painstaking. This one is made of cotton and has many stamps of the holy places where he visited. They are: Mt.Gas-an, Mt.Haguro-san, Mt.Yudono-san (Dewa Sanzan in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku) and so on...

A pair of cotton tabi with sashiko and a pair of kokake. Tabi is made of hand-spun white cotton and has nice sashiko for strength. Soles are machine-woven. Kokake is also made of hand-spun cotton and dyed with vegetable indigo and has fine sashiko for also strength. Kokake has no soles and it is worn over zori (Japanese sandals) for warmth and waterproof in winter. Both are in excellent condition. The first half of the 20th century. Cotton shibori (tie-dye) cloth for one kimono. It is rare as it is in the original paper wrapping when it was sold. It is written "Arimatsu Shibori" and produced by Owari Arimatsu "Takeda Kahei" which was established in Keicho 13 in Edo (1608) and the company's name changed to "Takeda Kahei Shoten" in Meiji 5 (1873). It is written "1 jo" which is for one kimono and about 12m. In good condition but might have some beige color on the selvedges from aging, however it can be cleaned by washing...
