Rare item. Boro cotton kimono (yukata) whose original ground cloth is jishiro Narumi-kongata. It is hand-spun cotton with stencil-dyeing which is imitating shibori (tie-dyeing) made in Meiji (1868~1912). Other cloth are machine-woven cotton. The first half of the 20th century. Sakiori sodenashi (vest) whose wefts are recycled strips torn from old cotton kimono, futonji and so on. The warps are asa (hemp). The sakiori textiles were mostly made in the regions along the Japan Sea side where the cold weather made it hard to cultivate cotton. This is a sodenashi ( vest ) of sori-hiki ( sledge-hauling ) from Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district. It has rectangular pieces of cloth with sashiko ( quilting ) attached in one of the shoulders and in front diagonally for strength and ornament. It is made of hand-woven cotton stripe and it has hand-spun and natural indigo dyed cotton for the lining. In excellent condition. 50.5cm x 81cm Late 19th to early 20th century.

Miyako-jufu man's kimono hand-woven of choma (ramie) and dyed with Ryukyu-ai. The wefts and the warps are hand plied. Miyako-jofu has been woven in Miyako Island in Okinawa since 14th century. It was called "Satsuma-jofu" in Edo period as the island belonged to Satsuma feudal domain. It was imposed as tax. Sakiori kotatsu-kake ( cover ) woven of cotton strips for wefts which are recycled from old kimono, futon cover, furoshiki ( wrapping cloth ) and so on. Warps are asa ( hemp ) threads. Kotatsu is a heater made of wooden frame where charcoals or a briquette of coal are put and covered with a futon ( cover ). The lining is cotton stripe and has a bit of yellowish parts. Pilgrim's hanten made of gray cotton with Sanscrit letters which are the symbols of the Buddhas. And also "Omine-san" in kanji letters which is located in Nara prefecture. It has been the hallow mountain and the center of the ascetic training, called shugen-do. This hanten has printed images of "En-no-gyosha, a founder of the shugen-do and "Fudo" in the back. This is an extra large komebukuro ( rice bag ) made of hand-spun cotton and dyed with natural indigo and vegetable brown color. Komebukuro was used when people exchange rice as gift or donated it to a shrine or a temple. It is made of many pieces of cotton cloth which are recycled from old kimono, furoshiki, futon cover and so on as cotton was precious in old days. Komebukuro had been used till 1920s and 30s. It has check, stripe and katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) pattern...
