This is a cotton Kurume kasuri futonji. It is said that Kurume kasuri was first woven ca.1800 in Kurume in Fukuoka Pref. in Kyushu. Its features are geometric and wood block like patterns and some have light blue indigo color. It was designated as important intangible cultural heritage in 1957, however only a few families are practicing traditional way of produce such as hand-binding, natural indigo-dyeing and hand-weaving these days. Sakiori kotatsu-kake ( cover ) woven of cotton strips for wefts which are recycled from old kimono, futon cover, furoshiki ( wrapping cloth ) and so on. Warps are asa ( hemp ) threads. Kotatsu is a heater made of wooden frame where charcoals or a briquette of coal are put and covered with a futon ( cover ). The lining is cotton stripe and has a bit of yellowish parts. In good condition but has a cotton kasuri mending patch, some wear and wefts loose parts. 20th century. 168cm x 164cm

Sakiori sodenashi (vest) whose wefts are recycled strips torn from old cotton kimono, futonji and so on. The warps are asa (hemp). The sakiori textiles were mostly made in the regions along the Japan Sea side where the cold weather made it hard to cultivate cotton. It has beautiful hand stitching (sashiko) in the top of the back, in the shoulders and in the both sides. In excellent condition and looks scarcely worn. Late 19th mid 20th century. 59cm x 91cm

Small wooden (kiri, paulownia) drawer coated with red urushi and has beautiful gold makie in front. It also has nice metal fitting for ornament as well as reinforcement. The drawers have green silk lining. In good condition, no distortion except for some stains in gold makie, some chips on the edge and urushi came off in the bottom.
