Yamato kasuri man's kimono made of hand-spun cotton for wefts and machine-spun cotton for warps. Yamato kasuri was woven since mid 18th century in Yamato region (Nara Pref.) Cotton kimono, white or indigo ground, with small kasuri pattern was very popular among students and men in Meiji and Taisho period (mid 19th to early 20th century). This is a typical early Showa ( 1920s to 1930s ) kimono which has striking colors, red silk lining and made of high quality soft silk. Pilgrim's cotton sodenashi (vest) with many stamps of holy places where she (woman pilgrim). She took the pilgrimage to "Saikoku-sanjyu-san-kasho" where are 33 temples (holy places) in Osaka-fu, Kyoto-fu, Hyogo, Nara, Wakayama and Gifu prefectures. She completed all the pilgrimage and the vest has all 33 stamps. The date is Showa 3-nen (1928). In excellent condition. 48cm x 72cm

This is an extra large komebukuro ( rice bag ) made of hand-spun cotton and dyed with natural indigo and vegetable brown color. Komebukuro was used when people exchange rice as gift or donated it to a shrine or a temple. It is made of many pieces of cotton cloth which are recycled from old kimono, furoshiki, futon cover and so on as cotton was precious in old days. Komebukuro had been used till 1920s and 30s. It has check, stripe and katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) pattern...

The title is "Shin-gata Kommon-cho", a new komon design book. These are plates with hand-painted Kenzan style design of autumn flowers such as chrysanthemums and balloon flowers. They have kanji letters "Kenzan" in the back. Ogata Kenzan ( 1663~1743 ) was a potter as well as a Rinpa school painter. He was a younger brother of Ogata Korin who was a prominent painter and a founder of Rinpa school painting. They collaborated in some of potteries. Kenzan style potteries with "Kenzan" sign have been made in large number till these days...

This is a sodenashi ( vest ) of sori-hiki ( sledge-hauling ) from Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district. It has rectangular pieces of cloth with sashiko ( quilting ) attached in one of the shoulders and in front diagonally for strength and ornament. It is made of hand-woven cotton stripe and it has hand-spun and natural indigo dyed cotton for the lining. In excellent condition. 50.5cm x 81cm Late 19th to early 20th century.
