This is a bag made of hand-spun cotton and has katazome pattern. This bag came from the same family as #1047657 Rokushaku-kanban, so it has the same pattern. It is dyed with bengara ( iron oxide ), one kind of pigments. The usage is not clear, but it was vertically folded into 6 layers, so possibly used as a pad put on a palanquin bearer's shoulder. Edo period. In good condition except for some indigo stains. 47cm x 53cm
