These are a pair of "choshi" for sake ( Japanese wine ) which are made of wood and coated with urushi. It has beautiful contrast of three urushi colors, red, black and natural wood. Choshi is a container for liquid, which has a handle and a beak. These ones have handles with black urushi, the top parts and lids with red urushi and the bottoms are coated with fuki-urushi, which is the technique that once coated urushi is wiped, so that the beautiful wood grain can be seen. The inside is also coated with black urushi. The both have some chips and one of the beaks has urushi peeled off and a crack in one of the handles, however generally in good condition. The latter half of the 19th century. Length with beak:27cm, without beak:20cm Height:24cm
