Large nobori, vertical banner post on the Tango-no-sekku (the Boy's Festival ) on May 5th which is for wishing each boy in the family grow up healthy and strong. This one has a motif of old tale "Ushiwaka-maru and Benkei". Benkei used to be a Buddhist soldier but was ousted from the temple because he was very rowdy. He decided to rob and collect 1000 swords from people. One day he encountered Ushiwaka-maru on the Gojo Big Bridge in Kyoto and assaulted him to rob the last sword, but he lost. He became a loyal retainer of Ushiwaka-maru (later called Minamotono Yoshitsune). It is made of hand-spun cotton and hand-drawn with tsutsugaki technique. In good condition but has some stains and mending stitches. More photos are available by request. 19th century. 77cm x 6m20cm
