Bashofu woman's kimono with warp kasuri pattern which is hand-woven of banana fiber and both wefts and warps are hand-plied. It is said that bashofu has been woven in Okinawa Islands (Ryukyu Archipelago) since 13th century, however it is woven only in a few islands these days. The weaving process of the bashofu has 20 steps and time consuming. It begins with growing the banana tree, stripping the bark, boiling with ash, taking off the fiber, drying, hand-plying the thread, dyeing, weaving and so on. Used but in excellent condition except for very light and scarcely noticeable two stains (last photo). 20th century. 120cm x 146cm
