Yutan, chest or drawer cover made of hand-spun cotton and dyed with natural indigo and vegetable yellow. It has karakusa (arabesque) design, which symbolyzes prospering of the decendents, with free-hand tsutsugaki technique. Tansu (drawer) was one of the marriage furniture and yutan was the cover to protect tansu from sunlight or dust. It usually has the bride's family crest on it. In good condition but has a mending patch and a few light stains and a rip. 19th century. 190cm x 169cm
