Sakkuri which is handwoven of hemp thread for warps and "okuso" for wefts. Okuso is by-product when hemp thread is made. It is not strong enough for warps. "O" means hemp and "kuso" means waste. This sodenashi (vest) has beautiful stitchwork with hemp thread in the upper body together with hand-spun cotton lining. It also has indigo dyed cotton cloth in the lower armholes and the collar belt with stitchwork with white cotton thread. It is from Ishikawa Pref. or Fukui Pref. located along the Japan Sea side. In excellent condition except for a few reddish stains and a small hole. Late 19th to mid 20th century. 66cm x 109cm
