MOCHE IV MONKEY STIRRUP VESSEL. Ca. A.D. 400 - 600. Ex New Jersey collection pre 1968. Height 7.5 inches with overall width of 8 inches. Cream and chocolate. Depicts sitting monkey curiously listening to a drum. Monkey wearing banded hat and holding a drum with both hands near right ear. Ears are spooled, facial details incised. Monkey wearing sleeved cape having vertical stripes on back with each stripe containing spiral designs. Feet together in front, toes incised. Drum has tassled sash hanging down the side probably to hold animal skin drum head. Possible repair on left knee of monkey but wear suggests if repaired it was contemporary with original creation. Beautiful piece in excellent condition.
