Divination piece in the shape of the god Eshu, placed by a priest next to his divination board. Eshu guarantees that all the other gods will be present and so the priest’s oracle will be accurate. H. 16 cm. This piece dates from the early 20th century, possibly older. Condition: age cracks, minor chips and good age wear. Provenance: Collection van der Zee, Leerdam, The Netherlands. A very unusual pair of pillow ends, both made of three panels. The central panels with scenes of deities or mythological figures in a garden, the openwork side panels with floral decorations and bats, symbolizing happiness, longevity and prosperity. These pillow ends were stitched to an embroidered pillow meant to decorate the wedding bed. This was common practice among the rich Chinese in Singapore and Malaysia. Date: early 20th century. Dimensions: 30x8,5 cm. Weight 128 g.

A fine and large sculpture of a deity touching his beard with one hand and holding a scepter in the other one. H. 72 cm. (83 cm including the stand). In the back of the figure there is a cavity for offerings. The figure dates from the later part of the Ming Dynasty, ca 16th/early 17th century.
