Pencil on paper with added color in crayon, 13" by 19 1/2", (unframed, but a damaged frame in which it was found is available with it). The scene, of a circa 1870 house with barn, outbuildings and neat haystacks, and a man on a horse drawn carriage, is titled at bottom "RES. OF HON. CHRISTIAN PARKER. SKETCHED BY. ED. A. SCHRANTZ." I thought this perhaps a New England or Mid Atlantic scene, or perhaps even Ohio, Illinois or Wisconsin, but thanks to the internet, this old survivor, which otherwise doesn't talk to us, has been determined to be from Ft. Wayne, Indiana (Allen County, Indiana). I googled the names and they came up in historical information/listings for the city. Further research will no doubt determine more about these two gentlemen and their places in Ft. Wayne society back in the 1800's. Oil paintings of similarly identified eastern estates are desirable, bringing tidy sums at auctions of American folk art. CONDITION: This drawing is in obviously compromised condition, as it was stored for long years apparently in damp conditions. The paper has deep wrinkles, (though they are not as obvious in person as the camera portrays them), and water stains at top three inches and bottom two inches; and at far left and far right. However, to me that doesn't detract from the overall appeal. It needs some love again, perhaps back in Ft. Wayne itself; a nice new mat, and a new frame. The story of this getting lost and abused in California and returned to Indiana thanks to the net would be a good one.
