An original lithograph on heavy paper, unframed, pencil signed at lower left by the noted Israeli contemporary artist MENASHE KADISHMAN (1932-2015). The print, featuring Kadishman's trademark imagery, of a sheep's head, measures 29 7/8" by 19 3/4". The artist was born in Tel Aviv and by the late 1940's was already studying with sculptors Moshe Sternschluss and Rudi Lehman. In the early 1950's, the young Kadishman lived on a kibbutz, where he was exposed to sheep and shepherding; the experience was to later determine his artistic direction. In the late 1950's, Kadishman studied sculpture with Anthony Caro and Reg Butler in London. The first one man exhibition was in 1965 at the Grosvenor Gallery; by 1978, Kadishman had a "living art" exhibit at the Venice Biennale-----a group of live sheep, painted blue. In later years, Kadishman's reputation grew dramatically, and he began to paint hundreds of sheep portraits, which have come to be associated with the artist. His sculptures are in many countries, those in Israel in prominent and prestigious locations. CONDITION: this lithograph was evidently in a damp environment, where it became heavily foxed as the photos make clear. There is also some light creasing/soiling and so forth. Bleaching might minimize or remove the heavy foxing but of course that would come at a cost. The print was photographed behind a sheet of Plexi to keep it flat for photography, as it has been rolled for a long time. Allow for a few reflections in some images.
