A striking watercolor and gouache painting of a black cat lounging amidst lily family garden flowers, 8 1/2" by 13 1/4" (18" by 22" as framed), signed at lower left by the noted New Mexico-associated artist AGNES GABRIELLE TAIT (1894-1981). Cats were a favorite subject of the artist, and collectors seek out those works specifically. Tait was born in New York City, and studied art there and in Europe (especially lithography). The Depression years were difficult for her as for countless other artists, and she was employed for a time by the Federal Art Project and other federally-sponsored art programs. Among her achievements from this period were post office murals. Due to her husband's declining health, she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and spent 22 years there. Trying to shake off the label "New Mexico artist" she traveled to Florida, Ireland and elsewhere in search of new subject matter, but ultimately returned to Santa Fe and passed away there in her late 80's. I acquired this in Santa Fe, and it retains a label from a Santa Fe frame shop.
