This is a wonderful large watercolor (18 1/2" by 27"----28" by 36" as framed) executed in the nineteenth century by English artist WALTER TOMLINSON (ca. 1833-1909). The scene is Ann Hathaway's famous cottage in Stratford-on-Avon, which Shakespeare lovers will recognize as the town associated closely with the Bard himself. When I first saw this I assumed it was a print and was amazed to find that it was indeed an original work of art. The condition is superb, with no foxing; there is a very slight vertical pressure crack about three inches long at extreme right. An extensive search turns up a few auction records, and some information to the effect that Mr. Tomlinson was an active and valued member of the Manchester Literary Club between the years 1874 and 1898. The club had a drawing of his titled "Stratford-on-Avon" and he also apparently painted a portrait of the club's president. Tomlinson also wrote "The Pictorial Record of the Royal Jubilee Exhibit", Manchester, 1888. The art stands on its own as an exceptional work of art with superb handling of light in an interior, and copious amounts of detail. This would be an excellent acquisition for the collector of Shakespeareiana. Allow for reflections in glass, which account for the steep angles at which photos were taken.
