This is an original etching and aquatint print with embossing on a heavy, quality handmade paper, the sheet 19 1/2" by 26", (currently unframed), the work titled "The White Nile", signed in pencil at lower right and numbered 44/125 at lower left. The total edition (including proofs?) may have been 250. The print is extremely clean and fresh and in excellent condition, with the exception of some tape residue on the reverse and very small light stain at left margin, barely visible. JULIAN TREVELYAN (1910-1989) was a prominent figure in painting and the graphic arts at mid century in England. His paintings have sold to the mid five figures at auction in London, and a catalogue raisonne of the artist's graphics work was just published. According to the biography on wikipedia, Trevelyan was related to prominent Britons in the arts/culture, and politics, eventually marrying the great granddaughter of Charles Darwin. Trevelyan studied at Stanley Hayter's school in printmaking, where Max Ernst, Oskar Kokoschka, Joan Miro and Picasso were also to be found at various times. By 1950 Trevelyan was a surrealist painter. He taught at the Chelsea School of Art during the 1950's and early 1960's, at which time he was influential to such artists as David Hockney and Norman Ackroyd. In 1987 Trevelyan was made a Royal Academician. During the summer of 2010 a retrospective of his work was held to mark the centenary of his birth. Evidently, Trevelyan traveled a great deal around the sunny Mediterranean basin, as many works bear titles indicating they were created during trips to Egypt, Malta, Italy and so forth. See the net for much more information on the artist. Allow for reflections in some images.
