Oil on canvas, 18 1/4" by 27 1/2" plus 3 1/2" wood frame, signed at lower right by the artist in Cyrillic and dated "51". This is a work of Russian impressionist LEONID BORISOVICH IANOUSH (1897-1978). His name has been spelled also as "Yanush". This is a finely executed work. Quite underrated currently, the artist was definitely professionally trained and very talented, his paintings spanning landscape, nudes and interiors. It appears that he is not currently all that well known but further scholarship could reveal more about his life and work. Condition is good with heavy soiling especially in the sky making a straightforward cleaning a good investment for the buyer. There might also be a bit of paint loss in that upper sky area. There is faint pencil writing on the stretcher which I am told means "The Forest" in Russian, and some other faint writing. In addition there is a small triangular stamp on the canvas and another stamp on the reverse as well.
