Gouache on paper on board, 17 1/2" by 12 1/2" and 1 1/2" frame/mat, signed at lower right "MIZEN". This work has the feel of illustration art, and well it should as FREDERIC KIMBALL MIZEN (1888-1964) was a noted illustration artist, having done covers for the Saturday Evening Post. He was a member of the Society of Illustrators. Mizen studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and was a student of the great Taos master Walter Ufer. Mizen's oils sell at major auctions. This work has some condition issues since it has doubtless changed hands a number of times and is not protected under glass. The old paper is browned and lightly scuffed in places. There is a missing piece about 3/4" long on the right edge, and a curving 3-4" crack/tear at left, as well as two other cracks at lower left. These can no doubt be repaired. The mat is later and needs to be replaced. I would guess the age of the piece as circa 1910-1925.
