This is a work in gouache, tempera or casein, 17 1/2" by 23 1/2" inside the mat liner (30" by 36" as nicely framed), signed at lower right in white "Liberte". JEAN LIBERTE (1896-1965) was an artist noted in reference works as early as the 1940's. A student at Cooper Union in New York and at the Art Students League with Kenneth Hayes Miller (at which he went on to teach, himself, after 1945), Liberte was a painter of many northeastern landscapes, including the Maine coast, Monhegan Island, and forests. Obviously he never forgot his New York roots as the present work seems to show a tenement in New York with a group of young people walking in narrow streets below drying laundry. Liberte was recognized as a full National Academician in the year 1960, and was known for his technical prowess with casein. This work is in a high quality frame, with a grayish weathered look, and gold leaf inner raised fillet. Condition appears to be excellent, the colors fresh and no damage noted. The painting is ready for the wall. See the net for more on the artist. ALLOW FOR REFLECTIONS IN THE GLASS IN SOME IMAGES. .,
