PAIR of original drawings of a traditionally dressed Moroccan man and woman, executed in pastel, each 10" by 7 3/4" (16 1/2" by 14 1/4" as framed), each signed by the noted American artist LOUIS J. ENDRES (1896-1989) and bearing the notation "Maroc". Endres hailed from Cincinnati and studied with Frank Duveneck. By his late 20's he was to be found in North Africa, in Morocco, where he found a wealth of artistic subject matter that continued to engage him throughout his life. Oil paintings have sold to at least $28,000 at auction, and he could certainly be considered one of the premier American orientalist artists. Subject matter varies, from Moroccan brides, to souks, to figure studies, often painted in vivid color. This pair of drawings is in excellent, fresh condition and can be hung on the wall as-is. Frames are also in excellent condition, and the French matting is also in fine condition. Orientalist art is a most popular category now with dedicated sales in Paris and Morocco taking place on a regular basis. See the net for more on this talented artist and his long artistic career.
