Watercolor on paper, 8" by 11 1/4" (16 3/4" by 20 1/2" in its quality wood apparently original frame), signed at lower left by the noted artist HENRY ERNEST SCHNAKENBERG (1892-1970). The work is titled "Things on the Beach" in longhand on the reverse and on a vintage Kraushaar Gallery label there, which includes the original price of $100. The work is representative of the artist's best known work, which was naturalistic painting of natural subjects. Schnakenberg was destined for the insurance business before he attended the Armory Show in 1913, that show inspiring him to become an artist. However, it apparently did not sweep him stylistically into the mainstream of 20th century art in eastern America. He attended the Art Students League under John Sloan and Kenneth Hayes Miller. In the course of a long career, Schnakenberg painted an unusually wide variety of subject matter in many media. He taught, contributed articles to art magazines, and exhibited in many venues, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Pennsylvania Academy, Art Institute of Chicago, Corcoran, Museum of Modern Art, and National Academy. Today many major museums around the nation include examples of his works. The Kraushaar was then and is now a major, prestigious gallery of American art based in Manhattan. Condition is excellent and the distressed oak frame is most complementary. You might want to re-mat with archival materials. .
