Decorative etching on paper in brownish inks showing ancient houses in a continental European village, 6 3/4" by 8 5/8" (15 1/2" by 16" as framed), signed in pencil in lower margin by the noted English modern art figure FRANK BRANGWYN (1867-1956). Brangwyn was a unique figure in British art, not easily categorized stylistically, but today his contribution to that art is unquestioned. Born in Belgium, he was in London by an early age, where he largely taught himself to draw. During the 1880's he worked in the studio of William Morris of the Arts and Crafts movement, and by 1890 was entering paintings in salons and exhibitions, garnering much attention. Today he is regarded as a major British impressionist artist, and oils sell for very large sums at London auctions. Brangwyn is also noted for his etchings, of which there are more than 300 known. CONDITION: I opened this up and discovered that the print is laid down on a board. The overmat pulls partially away and one can then see the browning of the paper. Simple old black inexpensive frame should be replaced as it is loose at the corners.
