Offered together as a pair are TWO limited edition lithographs on paper, each 28 7/8" by 22 1/2", unframed, by a master artist. One, an image of a rock strewn hillside, is numbered at lower left 38/65; the other image, a sketchy portrait of a man, possibly a self portrait, is numbered 42/50. JOHN EDWARD HELIKER (1909-1999) was a significant figure in American art of the twentieth century, working as an illustrator, and painting figures, florals, genre and interior scenes, landscapes and marines. At auction, works have exceeded $20,000. A student of Boardman Robinson, Kenneth Hayes Miller, Kimon Nicolaides, and Thomas Hart Benton, he began as a cubist but evolved towards a realist style. Heliker works are in 37 museum collections, including the most important American museums, and he is mentioned in 63 publications. He studied and taught at the Art Students League in New York, and taught at Columbia University and at Parson School of Design. In the graphic arts, Heliker experimented with lithography, principally in the 1960's. Heliker's sketchy, nervous line works well in lithography, it would appear. CONDITION: Both works are clean, though there are handling creases in some places and some stubbing at the corners. Shipping will likely be in a tube.
