Oil on canvas paintings laid on board, each 5" by 9 3/4" (8 1/2" by 13" framed), unsigned, the pair appearing to depict the exact same coastal dune, with interesting perhaps seasonal differences----one showing spring dune flowers, the other not----. The scene could possibly be dunes at the beach in San Francisco, where Golden Gate Park meets the ocean. Although unsigned, the handling, subject matter and color palette are immediately identifiable as by the hand of the noted California painter RICHARD DETREVILLE (1864-1929). Detreville was actually born in South Carolina but is now thought of entirely as a California artist. According to the Hughes biography, the artist was born "into a prominent old family of French ancestry", his grandfather having fought in the Revolutionary War with George Washington. Detreville is considered to have been a self-taught artist. By 1892 he was in California, settling in Stockton and then by 1910 in San Francisco. A prolific artist who promoted his own work, the most commonly seen paintings are of the San Francisco Bay area, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and Northern California. This pair is in clean condition and they are ready to hang on the wall.
