‏This is an intricate aquatint print, 25 3/4" by 29 3/4" (34" by 27 1/4" framed), signed in pencil at lower right by the artist and dated there "60", titled "Jeux d'ete" (Summer Games) at lower center, and numbered 76/210 at lower left, the work by GUILLAUME CORNELIS VAN BEVERLOO, best known by the pseudonym "CORNEILLE" (the French word for "crow"). I believe I was able to locate only one example of this particular print having sold at auction since 1998. Corneille, who passed away in the year 2010 after a long and distinguished career in the art world. Born in Liege, Belgium to Dutch parents, he was back in Holland by age 12. In 1948 the young artist was one of the founders of the "Reflex" movement, and in 1949, he was a founder of "Cobra". That movement dissolved in 1951 but left a strong impression on modern art at mid century. Corneille was influenced by Miro and Paul Klee, as well as primitive art. African art's stylized forms are visible in his works. The artist's works have sold into the six figures at major auctions in Europe and America. See the net for much, much more on Corneille and the Cobra movement. CONDITION: The work appears very clean and in fine condition. I have not opened it up to see it out of the frame but would be happy to do so upon request. A label on the reverse framing paper shows it was once offered or framed at a gallery in Minneapolis. .
