By the contemporary Japanese artist HIROMICHI YAMAGATA (1948-). this can be described as a collage of tissue like paper on which is drawn in pencil and blue ink an abstract, almost biomorphic decorative design, charcoal used to create a smudged background, then the paper was affixed around the edges to a white canvas background. It is signed at lower right "Yamagata" and dated there 2007. On the reverse is a personal inscription to "Steve", the previous owner, (dated 12.10.07), to whom this work was presented by the artist after this owner, a doctor, provided emergency medical treatment to Yamagata in the year 2007. CONDITION: The work has a small tear in the tissue paper at upper right, which was amateurishly corrected with adhesive clear tape. There is also a small abrasion near that area (see photo). The size of the white canvas to which the paper collage is affixed is 20" by 16" (51 cm. by 41 cm.). I considered sending this to Japan for auction. From emailed images, a major Tokyo auction house (Mainichi), with a long history of handling Yamagata's work, assigned a provisional auction value of $1,000-2,000 to the piece, based on its condition and the fact that the work is not typical of the style for which the artist is best known. Some major works have exceeded $40,000 at auction, and Yamagata is an immensely successful contemporary artist, there being thousands of prints in the marketplace sold by galleries. I considered sending this to Japan for sale but will instead offer it here. .
