Oil on canvas laid on board, 10 1/4" by 13 1/4" (16" by 19" as framed), the subject snow-streaked brown foothills of the Rocky Mountains in early spring, the main range of the mountains in the distance, signed at lower right in ink "J.D. TURNER", titled on the reverse "Near Cochrane/April 1970/JD Turner". This is a beautiful work by the noted Alberta painter JOHN DAVENALL TURNER (1900-1980). Turner, according to the long bio on the sheet attached to the reverse side, was born in England and was in Alberta on the prairies of Canada by age six. By age twenty he was already active with the Edmonton Art Club. By the mid 1930's he was traveling across the country selling his art. Turner's works have been exhibited in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and many other institutions. This painting reminds me a lot of some of the Group of Seven artists like A.Y. Jackson, who worked in Canada's far north. Obviously Turner was familiar with the techniques and subject matter of such artists. Condition: Generally clean with a slight smudge of foreign matter in the sky, vertically into the hill; can be easily removed. The liner has a slight bit of soiling at top center right.
