A PAIR of paintings on canvas, each featuring hanging game birds after the hunt, each 20" by 16", unframed, each signed by the well-known American western artist HENRY H. CROSS (1837-1918). The use of green painted wood panel background suggests the artist was familiar with the artist William Harnett and his style. Cross was born in New York state and became well known in the 19th century as a painter of portraits of Native American luminaries of the time. He also knew how to paint animals, having studied with Rosa Bonheur in Paris in the 1850's. Always adventurous, he went west with the P.T. Barnum circus. In 1862 in Minnesota he witnessed the Sioux uprising, and learned to speak the Sioux language. Later he gained the confidence of major chiefs, and it is his paintings of them that made the reputation he enjoys to this day (at least one such portrait brought $80,000 at auction in recent years). Cross also painted race horses and other animals, especially those of the Great West. He visited Hopi pueblos in Arizona during the 1890's and died in Chicago in 1918. This pair of works has been relined and cleaned, one having had a white foreign substance on it that has been successfully removed. The paintings are now ready for framing. They will complement any cabin or western setting, or sportsman's home or office.
