An exceptional watercolor and gouache painting of a young girl carrying a pail, pondering the white ducks which move towards her on a tiny pond in a verdant bucolic rural landscape, a faint local church steeple in the distance the only other sign of man. This is one of the finer works by English listed artist FRED (sometimes FREDERICK) HINES (1860-1930). Hines specialized in rural scenes with figures; forests, lakes and ponds, and cottages populate his rural 19th century idyllic world, now largely lost. He seems to have been most active between about 1875 and 1927, exhibiting at the Royal Academy. This work from a distance has the feel of an oil painting. Condition is generally excellent, the colors fresh; I note a dime-sized brown foxing mark in the sky at upper left. This could likely be removed or minimized greatly by a paper restorer, and it would be well worth doing so. Measurements are 13 1/2" by 20 1/2" (22" by 28 1/2" in an ornate old frame which has some losses). Truly an above average English nineteenth century watercolor.
