This is an example of one of the more desirable and scarce Currier and Ives images, the "Skating Scene--Moonlight" of the year 1868, the image measuring 7 3/4" by 12 7/16", the sheet a somewhat irregularly cut 9 1/4" by 13 7/16". The work is lightly taped to backing at the top corners only, so, it is not laid down; however, the condition is only fair, with narrow margins generally (just below the title at bottom, and widest at top, at about 5/8" or so, and the sides roughly 1/2" or a little less. There is a small tack hole at extreme upper left in the image, and a generally vertical crease extending from upper edge to just below the line of the distant hillside at right center. Color is hand applied, in yellow, green, red and blue, but is either sparingly applied originally or is somewhat faded or both. The frame appears to be the original veneered dark wood type frame commonly seen with Curriers, and the glass is bubbled and wavy and might well be original as well. Photos were taken with the glass removed. The image is a favorite, one of the "New Best 50" small folio prints in the 1990 re-evaluation. ASK FOR MORE IMAGES OF CONDITION ISSUES.
