A vintage (mid 20th century) fine charcoal on paper drawing of a young New Mexico woman in traditional shawl, her expressive face beautifully drawn by a trained hand, the work signed at lower right "E. Gonzales". Oddly, I cannot tie this to a listed artist by that name, but the talent is undeniable. Measurements are 22 1/4" by 18 1/2" (25" by 21" in attractive gold framing). The work is in the style of famous artist and influential teacher Nicolai Fechin---perhaps "E. Gonzales" was a student of Fechin. In any event, this is a fine addition to any collection of Southwest art. The artist used a rather primitive, minimally processed paper with many brown inclusions adding a rugged quality to the drawing. Paper is also exhibiting some light wrinkling and it is a bit rumpled especially at left side and bottom, but this does not subtract from the overall effect of the drawing. Allow for reflections in some images.
