This painting is something of a mystery, in that it depicts a fantastic classic castle on a hill, obviously in the Old World, a donkey pulling a card in the foreground......yet, there is a modernity to the work, especially in the somewhat cubist handling of the lines of the architecture, but, also, there's modernity in the entire structure of the image. Painted on an old board, this measures 26" by 18" (30" by 22" in a modern frame). The painting is signed at lower right "M. Lieberman" and is dated there 1905. The only possible match for this name would be the great German impressionist painter Max Liebermann, but, having checked with several art world specialists, I do not believe the work to be by that artist. The remains of an old newspaper page on the reverse are in English, and date probably to the first half of the century. The painting was purchased in Texas purely for its decorative appeal and that is the basis on which I will offer it here. Condition is generally very good with some overall dry dustiness and a few minor abrasions are present but they are minor.
