Crayon drawing on paper of the picturesque old historic mission San Carlos Borromeo at Carmel, California, (dating to the year 1771), so identified, signed and dated 1938 at lower right, by the noted Tacoma, Washington architect SILAS E. NELSEN (1894-1987). The work, 11 1/2" by 8 1/2" and 15" by 12" framed, shows the facade of the popular mission. Net information shows Nelsen was born in Wisconsin and made his career as an architect of commercial buildings, homes, and churches, in the Tacoma, Washington area, while with Heath, Gove and Bell, architects. Evidently his architectural interests extended beyond his local area. The drawing is in excellent condition. The faux-wood grain mid-century frame is not especially complementary.
