Very decorative truly antique, 1770's print of an elegant lady standing, in the sanguine color, crayon technique (also known as "chalk-manner") perfected by talented eighteenth century artist GILLES DEMARTEAU (1722-1776). The print, executed after a painting by the great French Rococo master Jean-Honore Fragonard, measures 15" by 10 5/8" inside the fine French matting, with gilt border and numerous outlines, that in turn housed in a gold leaf antique frame measuring 22" by 18". Fragonard's name appears in the margin at lower left, and Demarteau's at lower right, along with "No. 35". At bottom center margin appears "A Paris chez Demarteau. Graveur du Roi, rue de la Pelterie a la Cloche". The print bears convincing evidence of its great age, including brown foxing/discoloration (the largest smaller than the diameter of a pencil eraser), a very small hole at lower left, creasing, soiling and general wear. There may have been attempts to repair some of the short tears, there being whitish areas in the face and uppermost portion. To summarize, the print is hardly in mint condition, but the overall antique effect of this very traditional imagery is very satisfying, especially at normal viewing distance. Some rectangular whitish areas in photos are simply reflections.
