One of two works by the artist in my shop, this is an etching on paper, 8 3/4" by 6 5/8" sheet, signed in pencil at lower right margin "PHILIP KAPPEL". This is a fine etching of a pair of wind-sculpted pine trees on an exposed knoll, by a well regarded artist most associated with Connecticut, where he was born and where he died. Kappel's work includes a wide variety of subjects in painting and the graphic arts. It appears that he traveled in the Caribbean and Mexico, but derived most of his subject matter from the New England area. He worked in Maine and in the Gloucester/Cape Ann area. Many, if not most, important East Coast museums have examples of his work. The print came out of a garage hoard, so has been exposed for a long time, resulting in moisture rippling, some soiling especially in margins, and browning of the brittle extreme edges; the condition is only fair. The simple black frame in which I acquired this (not pictured) is available upon request at no extra cost.
