Vertical format colorful oil painting of a mounted cowboy making his way through a steep canyon in the Southwest or Rockies as the afternoon's last sun reddens a crag at right, a dramatic cloud beyond the "V" shaped notch topping an expansive and empty land beyond. The painting, measuring " by ", unframed, has some age but I doubt it would have been painted earlier than about the mid 1950's, judging from the stretcher and stapled canvas. It is signed at lower right "C C Montgomery" or "C G Montgomery". There is a western listed artist by the last name Montgomery, who died in 1950, but this does not appear to be by that artist; perhaps more research will reveal more about the artist. Nevertheless it is a beautifully painted vintage work with great depth and color; the artist was skilled. A quality frame would enhance the presentation. There is a one inch vertical cut/scuff in the sky at upper center (see images), otherwise condition is very good. This flaw can be easily rectified with professional restoration.
