Watercolor extensive landscape with trees and hills, larger than the typical work of the artist, at 12 1/2" by 16 3/4" and 24 1/2" by 30 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right with the signature of Sonoma County artist ELIZABETH HOEN (1868-1955), and dated there 1910. Hoen was a student of the renowned, influential Northern California watercolorist Lorenzo P. Latimer. She painted landscapes, and coastals primarily, often in small scale. Hoen came from a pioneer Sonoma County family. Her father started a trading post in the Carillo adobe, the first building in the Sonoma Valley, and he was involved in surveying and laying out the future city of Santa Rosa. Hoen maintained a studio in Los Angeles but is clearly most closely associated with her native Sonoma County. This work is in very good condition considering it is on paper and over 100 years old. There do appear to be two generally vertical areas at center left and center right, where the color appears slightly different---this might be due to chemical reaction with some old backing over time. The effect is I think more visible through photographs than with the naked eye, as is often the case in this situation. The frame has some wear and larger loss at lower right but all can be easily touched up, and you would not have to reframe.
