Something of a mystery, this is a very interesting soft pencil drawing of a young woman, 13 1/4" by 9 1/4" (19" by 15" framed), signed indecipherably at lower right and dated there 1931. Try as I might, I have absolutely come to a dead end when it comes to figuring out this signature. Adjacent to that signature an inscription reads "Baroness Leonnie Perraja". The drawing clearly exhibits modernist influences, including a sort of cubist handling of the hair curls, and a flattening of elements of the image. There is a sketch on the reverse side, simpler, of a profile. This light-eyed young woman, and the artist who drew her, remain an intriguing mystery.
