This attractive and interesting print is a cover of the November 19, 1897 issue of the famous Parisian literary periodical "Gil Blas", which was issued between the years 1879 and 1914. Named after Alain-Rene Lesage's novel, it was a popular read in the late 19th and early 20th century among the fashionable. It serialized famous novels before they appeared as books. This work, titled "Le Vilain Homme", is signed and dated in the plate, by the important Swiss-born artist THEOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923). Steinlen was born in Lausanne on Lake Geneva in 1859. After training at a textile mill in eastern France, he moved to Paris and the Montmartre literary and art scene. He found the scene creatively nourishing, and went on to spend most of the rest of his life there, befriending the artistic and literary crowd, which included the likes of his friend, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Steinlen interacted with the avant-garde art crowd at Le Chat Noir, creating Belle Epoque poster images for Aristide Bruant. Between 1883 and the end of his life he created thousands of drawings and lithographs for magazines and other publications, a number of which fetch very handsome sums today at auctions of works on paper. There is a bonus---there is more attractive imagery printed on the reverse. Condition is excellent, save for some crinkling at very top, and the work, simply framed, can hang on your wall with a minimum of fuss.
