This is a fine wood engraving from the end of the 1920's by well listed American printmaker LYND WARD (1905-1985). The work is from the 1929 woodcut novel "God's Man" by Ward. Measuring 6 3/8" by 4 1/2" inside the mat (13 1/2" by 11 1/2" as framed) this print is by an artist well recognized today especially for his achievements in the graphic arts and illustration art. He was an associate of the National Academy, and examples by his hand grace the collections of the Library of Congress and museums nationwide. A book and children's book illustrator as well, Ward experimented in a number of areas in graphic arts including etching and block printing. He studied in Germany in the 1920's, accounting for the Expressionist influence we see in many of his prints. The works I saw in a monograph on the artist remind me of prints by Rockwell Kent and Paul Landacre in both subject matter and that they exhibit sharp contrasts of black and white. This example is clean as viewed. I opened the backing and see the print is lightly taped to mat at top and bottom, and when cut, apparently from the book, the cut was not perfectly straight, as shown. Affixed to that backing is a photocopy of information on the book. See the net for more information on the artist.
