ONE OF A NUMBER BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**A PAIR of small etchings (one, "Cypress Trees at the Beach", 4 3/4" by 6" inside the mat, and 10 1/2 by 11 1/2" framed, the other, "Old Chinese Telephone Exchange", 6" by 4 1/8" and 11 1/2" by 9 1/2" framed), by the noted California artist HARRIET GENE ROUDEBUSH (1908-1998). The artist titled both in margin and signed at lower right. Roudebush was born in Portland, Oregon and moved to Sacramento as a youth. Art education in the Bay Area followed, in the late 1920's, and by 1932 she was producing etchings, generally of familiar Bay Area scenes. She worked until at least the 1970's, when she moved to Pacific Grove near Carmel. These small etchings proved popular with visitors to San Francisco, who kept them as souvenirs, as they are now often found in places distant from California. Interestingly this one seems to have headed east, to Maryland, for a while, before returning to California. The prints are very clean and fresh; frames are faux bamboo style popular at mid century. All photos taken through detail-dulling non-glare glass, which should be discarded and replaced. There is one other print from the same set which could be kept together with these as it is identically framed---see the "Japanese Tea Garden" Roudebush in my shop.
