Antique Victorian era lady's hand fan ("opera fan"), framed shadow box style, the fan itself 16 1/2" by 10 1/2" as fully opened, the printed images on the fan of feminine, delicate young dancing ladies, floral and leaf motifs bordering, the base worked mother of pearl with floral designs, as well as a most unusual VANITY MIRROR at far right, modern typeface in the box stating "Opera Fan With Mirror/Nannie Campbell Moore 1858 New Orleans". I googled the name and found the following genealogical information that seems to fit: " Nannie Campbell Moore, daughter of John P. and Mary C, Moore was born July 16, 1858, married Thomas Smith Bean of Augusta, Ga., Feb. 21, 1884, and the following children were born of this marriage: Joseph Sanborn Bean, born Nov. 22, 1884, Marion Moore Bean, born Oct. 24, 1886." The fan shows evidence of its great age, with the paper partially or totally separating in some of the folds, but considering the great age of this most delicate item, this is understandable. The piece is now protected in the shadowbox which is about 1/2" in depth (inner part of frame has dislodged at left and right edges). The images are PRINTED, then hand colored. An interesting piece of Louisiana history; one can see its owner at a plantation house or live performance or wedding on a steamy afternoon, fanning herself in the days long before the advent of the electric fan or air conditioner. There is no proof of the tie to this particular New Orleans lady, just the modern inscription.
