A colorful and whimsical painting of tropical fruits in a basket, two birds adding to the charm, signed at lower right by early Haitian artist ANDRE SATURNE (1927-1983). The work is painted on board and measures 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" (19" by 23" framed in wood with gold leaf inner portion). Saturne was born in Petionville, a Port-au-Prince suburb. He attended the now-famous Centre d'Art in 1956 when the Haitian art movement as we know it today was just beginning to come together. Saturne was inspired by masters such as Gourgue, Normil and Jasmin Joseph. In 1962 he came to the United States and received further art training in New York at the Art Students League. His works were exhibited in New York by noted Haitian art promoter Leon Chalom. The artist returned to Haiti in 1972 and died there in 1983. The late filmmaker and director Jonathan Demme, a very well known collector of Haitian art, was very partial to the works of Andre Saturne. This painting, in various areas including the pineapple and sugar cane stalk at bottom, exhibits some of the so-called "alligatoring" of the paint (where it "splits", while still "wet", in the long process of drying); but the paint is stable.
