By the hand of the noted American illustrator, sporting artist and printmaker CHURCHILL ETTINGER (1903-1984) is this pencil signed etching titled at lower left "Sunrise" the subject two Canada Geese rising from the water. The print measures 5 1/2" by 7 1/2" inside the innermost mat and 12 1/2" by 14" as framed in oak. Ettinger was born in New Jersey and died in Vermont in the 1980's. In between, he was a commercial artist, illustrator, working for advertising agencies, as art director for a publisher of pulp magazines, and directly for sporting-subject magazines, which commissioned works for their covers. He was an active etcher and also created drypoints, totaling over 180 images, the earlier ones published by Associated American Artists. Today one commonly encounters his pencil signed prints of ducks and duck hunters and other sporting subjects, though his original work is more scarce.
